How is a typical 1 on 1 therapeutic sound session at Surissia?
Every session is a different experience, every time. We begin by having a gentle, introductory chat about what is present for you in your life at this moment and what your intention is. I listen fully to what you share and I select the sounds and instruments for the session.
It’s most common for clients to lie down while receiving therapeutic sound. It is important that you are physically comfortable while lying on a mat on the floor. Cushions and blankets are provided for extra support. It’s also possible to sit or stand while the sounds are played.
I will guide you through some deep breathing techniques and a body scan meditation for relaxation. You reconnect with your intention. I play the instruments and you receive the sounds.
If it is appropriate for your session and you are comfortable with touch, some instruments can be placed on your body, such as Tibetan Singing Bowls and weighted Tuning Forks. This is discussed and demonstrated in advance.
Depending on the intention of the session, there may be some dialogue between us, or there may not. You may talk to tell me what is happening for you or to ask questions at any time, or you may be silent throughout. I may ask you questions about what you are experiencing.
Some clients like to bring an eye-mask. Others simply close their eyes. You can move to adjust your position and stop a sound or the session at any time.
At the end of the session, I will welcome you back and ask you to wiggle your fingers and toes, stretch out and come up to seated position. This is an opportunity for you to share your experience and discuss anything you feel relevant.
It is important that you feel grounded before you leave and I will check this with you. If you are open to it, I can offer suggestions to continue your relationship with sound throughout the week until your next session.
What kinds of sounds are used?
A range of specialist instruments are used to deliver the sound treatment. These are Tibetan Singing Bowls, Crystal Singing Bowls, the Shamanic Drum, the Rattle, the Rainstick, the Gong, Chimes, Tingshas, Tuning Forks and my Voice.
How does sound therapy feel?
A session includes relaxation, however, therapeutic sound can elicit a range of sensations depending on the intention. These feelings can be comfortable and uncomfortable, pleasant or unpleasant, to experience. Each sound interaction with your body, mind and spirit can give you a range of sensory information that can be physical, emotional, insightful, illuminating, curious or mystical.
Client experiences vary from a range of mental, emotional, physical or spiritual release, insights or guidance through colours, images, words, involuntary movements, nausea, temperature changes, energy awareness, and feelings of relaxation, clarity, sadness and positivity. It is not uncommon for a client to fall asleep, so if you do, it was exactly what you needed and the sound treatment is still effective.
If you are completely new to sound therapy, I can introduce the sounds to you before the treatment begins.
